WHO GIVES A CRAP? HOW GOOD IS RECYCLED TOILET PAPER?
Can my backside help the planet, and my toilet activity become greener?
Thing Number 2! So I'm sitting on the toilet, doing what I do best (my wife really loves me) and it hits me... Is toilet paper environmentally friendly? I don't have a clue. I mean it's paper, that can't be good right? Does it come from recycled sources? And what's the deal when it goes down the loo?
So I do some Googling and it turns out that toilet paper wipes out 27,000 trees a day! Are you kidding me! Ok let's shelve the sad part of this story and move on to celebrating my backside going green!
As is always the case for my 52 Things journey (52 changes, one a week, to go green) I wanted this change to be relatively inexpensive. I also want to celebrate and doff my hat to people who are really trying to make a difference to our planet.
Finally after some nosing around the internet, interjected with a glass of my favourite IPA, I stumble upon these dudes - Who Gives A Crap, and think, now we're talking!
Who gives a crap toilet paper, environmentally friendly with an amazing story
So a quick summary of their story... these guys rock. Who Gives A Crap was founded in 2012 by mates Simon, Jehan and Danny.
They discovered not only that toilet paper wipes out 27,000 trees a day, but that 2.3 billion people across the world don't have access to a toilet and around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases
caused by poor water and sanitation.
These chaps wanted to make a difference and boy have they. Who Gives A Crap, not only makes 100% environmentally friendly toilet roll, they also donate 50% of all their profits to help build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world. Hats off to you guys!
This is exactly what this blog is all about, celebrating and gorging on happy stories about people who are making a difference. And these guys have that in spades.
Who Gives A Crap's crowd funding campaign was amazing, founder, Simon, sat on a toilet for 50 hours straight until they had reached their first target of enough pre-orders to start production - $50,000. I think he might be my hero!
Environmentally friendly toilet paper, so how much is this going to cost me?
I loved their story, I hope to love the product but how much is this going to cost us before we take the plunge? As said 52 Things is all about changes that won't break the bank. So out came the calculator.
To work this out I will be using MySupermarket to find the cost of toilet paper, but let's get down some ground rules.
- I won't be comparing Who Gives A Crap against the cheapest products on the market (value brands). That would be like comparing a soggy motorway service station sandwich for a handmade Scooby-Doo triple deluxe sandwich!
- For all future 52 Things comparisons I will use either a supermarket's middle ground product (in this occasion, Asda's shades toilet paper) or the closest brand I can find that compares on quality (this time Andrex's classic clean white toilet tissue rolls).
How does Who Give A Crap stand up?
Product | Cost per roll | Sheets per roll | Overall cost for 400 sheets |
---|---|---|---|
Who Gives A Crap 24 rolls | £1 | 400 | £1 |
Who Gives A Crap 48 rolls | 75p | 400 | 75p |
Asda Shades 24 rolls | 33.3p | 200 | 67p |
Andrex Classic 18 rolls | 55p | 190 | £1.16 |
So what is recycled toilet paper actually like?
With a potential increase in toilet roll of only 8p, we headed over to their website, grabbed our credit card, and placed our first order, for those of you wanting to test the product out they do offer a free trail.
First off delivery and unboxing. This really was a lot of fun, we are trying to teach our kids about climate change so this was a great way to get them on board.
A big box arrives (free delivery over £20) on your door step. (We loved the fact you could choose for the parcel to be left in a safe place or with a neighbour, as we are often out). The kids get to rip open the box and use it for a new toy (a great piece of re-using). They also loved staking the rolls up and we played a quick game of skittles while we talked about how many trees we were saving. I have never had so much fun with toilet paper :)
You can choose a one off delivery or choose how often you want a new batch to arrive. Total bonus here if you choose a subscription as you can save an extra £5! It is also super easy to change the delivery dates if you are still 'fully stocked' with loo roll.
One small point you will have to store 48 rolls if you want the best savings, however being so small the rolls should fit under beds or on top of cupboards etc.
Amazing branding = upcycled wrapping paper
The first thing we noticed when we got out the actual rolls and unwrapped a few was how amazing the branding was. The cool paper designs that cover the rolls make great wrapping paper for small presents. Extra marks guys.
The big one, are the toilet rolls comfy on your behind?
So, and this is what it comes down to, is the toilet paper actually comfortable to use? Or does every wipe fill me with dread? The verdict... It's a 10 out of 10 :) I can honestly say I wouldn't have noticed the difference and as a family we are all completely happy with Who Gives A Crap toilet rolls.
We went with their standard 100% recycled toilet paper range, which we thought was 'bob on'. If you want something even more special they do have a premium bamboo range. Personally I don't think it would be worth the extra cash, you're only washing it down the toilet!
Are they actually 100% environmentally friendly?
According to their website, the recycled toilet paper is made from recycled books and office paper. With no inks, dyes or scents and completely biodegradable. Need I say more :)
